The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is comprised of 21 middle and high school students from the District of Columbia. The mission of the YAC is to develop a cadre of young leaders with critical thinking skills who will share knowledge and expertise around adolescent health issues. The YAC meets every week to develop youth led projects and insure activities implemented are meeting the needs of young people in the District of Columbia.

YACsters Reflect On Their First Outreach
Community outreach plays an important role in the activities the Youth Advisory Committee Members undertake. Each month YAC members head out into the community to distribute health packets and engage community members in conversations about the importance of taking care of their sexual health. Each packet contains condoms, information on how to put on male and female condoms, STD information, testing site locations, and more.
Here's what some of the members had to say about their first outreach event:
My first outreach for this year was great. I met some new people, heard some new stories, and got a chance to hang out with new YAC members. This outreach allowed me to see just how much people care about their well-being. Even though there were some people who just passed me by, there were a lot of people who took them. - Simone Banks-Mackey
I really enjoyed my first outreach. I met and saw some really interesting people. I got suggestions on what we should include with the condoms and health information. This outreach allowed me to come out of my shell because I don’t like speaking to strangers. I also really enjoyed hanging out with other YAC members. - Araminta Scott
The first outreach was filled with a lot of fun. Passing out the condoms and health information made me feel like I was making a small difference. I was confident in approaching people. Some people were resistant in taking the condoms, while others wanted two packets. Overall it was a wonderful experience. - Mion Edwards
