On November 20, 2013, the D.C. Commission on Black Men and Boys held a panel entitled “A Candid Conversation on Bullying.” Our very own YAC member, Christian Phillips-Gilbert, was a youth panelist at the event. Christian, a sophomore at Eastern Senior High School and a first year member of the YAC, was able to provide a candid perspective of youth bullying in DC and highlight critical factors when developing anti-bullying initiatives in schools. This well-attended event, held at Martin Luther King Library, was organized by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton and attended by Mayor Vincent C. Gray.
“The testimony was
great. I spoke in front of many people including 6 representatives and
Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. The people in the back, including my
family and Ms. Latonia, were clapping and cheering for me. After the round
table for bullying, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton met me and the Afro
American newspaper spoke to me and I (also) ended up speaking to a person that
works with 99.1 and was on the radio.” - Christian
Phillips-Gilbert
