Do you ever feel like your work load keeps piling up? That you are unable to relax or take time for yourself because you are too preoccupied with other tasks? Well that is normal for most teenagers, but such health issue is not one to be overlooked nor ignored. There are countless sources of stress mainly from societal pressures and the physical environments themselves. Many teens stress out easily because they feel they have no support, they do not have enough time to complete tasks, and that too many assignments are piling up at once. On top of the work load, teens are trying to build up their resumes for college by participating in many extracurricular activities, while balancing a social life. Teens are forced to juggle all these tasks at once, when really most of us can’t multitask. It has been proven that high stress levels can contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, and other illnesses in many individuals. Stress also has a high correlation to alcoholism, obesity, suicide, drug addiction, cigarette addiction, and other harmful behaviors. Teens partake in such stereotypical and dangerous activities merely because they have no support and constant cycles of stress.
With that, it is our responsibility to provide teens with the help they need. There are several simple steps teens can take to tackle their stress levels and eliminate any sign of anxiety. First, stay organized! Make a calendar or use your agenda and plan accordingly. Keep track of all important dates, and start early on any assignments. Procrastination only provokes stress. Second, make time for yourself. Do things you know you enjoy, like playing sports, listening to music, baking, reading, anything, you name it. Lastly, find support. Use your peers or anyone important in your life who you know you can talk to. They tend to give great advice and just provide moral support. So the next time you feel stressed out, be proactive and do something about it.
